The Costa Calma is a holiday resort on the south-eastern coast of Fuerteventura. This tourist destination was custom built in the 1970’s. It’s now become one of the best known resorts on the island.
The Costa Calma or the “Calm Coast” in English is an interesting choice of name. This part of Fuerteventura is popular for windsurfing and other board activities. The resort is little more than a small bay that covers a distance of 1.5 kilometres.
Costa Calma has a large German population so you may need to brush up on your language skills. Here there are some excellent bars, cafes, restaurants and entertainment on offer.
Costa Calma Beaches & Windsurfing
The 9 mile long Sotavento beach lies on the Costa Calma. One of the top locations on the island for windsurfing in particular. Sotavento is one of the best beaches that belongs to the island of Fuerteventura. Sotavento hosts the world windsurfing and kiteboarding championships each year.
Playa Costa Calma
Playa Costa Calma is actually the main beach here which is vastly different to Sotavento. There are hardly any waves here thanks to the surrounding bay that protects the resort. This beach is well kept all year round and was awarded a Blue Flag in 2006.
The sand is a beautiful golden colour which is very fine in composition. There is a beach bar here for food and drinks and hire services for parasols and sun loungers. Water Sports are big business here with several surfing and dive academies. These dive centres offer many different courses for diving and other disciplines.
Costa Calma Things to do
The Costa Calma lies between Sotavento beach on one side and the Parque Natural de Jandia. Jandia Natural Park (picture above) is a protected area which is part desert and part volcanic in composition. This park stretches to the southern tip of the island and is well worth exploring during your visit.
Costa Calma Windsurfing
Much of the nightlife in Fuerteventura happens at the busier resorts. There are still some good bars, clubs and cafes to enjoy here. Los Piratas is one of the best known clubs. DVN, Coco Beach Bar and Musikbar Cheers are some of the others you may want to check out.
