Cala d’Or is one of the most picturesque and relaxing holiday resorts on the island of Majorca. This tourist destination is located on the southeastern coast, an area dominated by beautiful little beaches and coves.
Cala d’Or generally attracts visitors that are looking for a quieter holiday, this is also true for most of the resorts on the eastern coastline. Cala Ferrera, Cala Egos and Cala d’Or town centre are the three main districts that form this popular village. The tranquil lifestyle here seems a million miles away from the major city of Palma and surrounding resorts that lie some 45 minutes to the west.
Things to do in Cala d’Or, Majorca
Cala d’Or is known as one of the more sophisticated resorts in Majorca and much on offer here tends to reflect that. From it’s humble fishing village roots, this area now boasts designer shops along Avinguda Tagomago with many trendy bars and restaurants. Moored at the beautiful marina you will normally find luxury yachts and perhaps rub shoulders with a few celebrities dining at one of the fabulous marina restaurants. Below are a few of our favourite attractions and things to do in Cala d’Or if you are lucky enough to visit here.
Cala d’Or Beaches & Coves
Officially there are 5 sandy beaches found in Cala d’Or along with several smaller coves. The biggest and most popular beach is Cala Gran (Big Cove) which has a length of around 100 metres. None of the beaches found here are particularly big but what they lack in size, they more than make up for in beauty. The surrounding coves and green trees exaggerate the white Ibiza style buildings and architecture. Cala d’Or beach is the most southern and closest to the marina. Heading north is Cala Gran followed by Cala Esmeralda, Cala Ferrera and Cala Serena which is the most northern of the beaches found here. Due to the cove-like nature of the beach locations, the water is typically calm and suitable for swimmers of all ages.
Cala d’Or Marina & Yacht Club
Cala d’Or Marina is one of the most beautiful found on the island of Majorca. It’s difficult to miss if you visit these parts. The Marina covers an area of 30,000 m2 with mooring berths for around 560 boats. A wide range of services are available which include water and electricity. There are also various types of maintenance for the moored boats and yachts.
Once moored you will definitely want to check out the exclusive Yacht Club. Assuming you have not already requested accommodation there. The Yacht Club is stunning and full of luxury both inside and out. Some of the top facilities include a gymnasium, saunas and steam rooms and a swimming pool. Inside there is also a restaurant and piano bar. There are also various rooms that cater for special occasions and events.
Cala Mondragó Natural Park
Located to the south of Porto Petro is Cala Mondragó. A protected wetlands and natural park of incredible beauty. Cala Mondragó is a remote area with 2 beaches flanked by cliffs. These offer spectacular views of the sea and the surrounding areas.
The natural park is home to many different types of wildlife that are rarely seen in other locations. The sea is crystal clear here which makes it a top spot for snorkelling and other diving activities. Walking is a popular activity here. There are several different trails to take in more of the wildlife and scenery
Cala Egos is a smaller resort which is a district of the larger Cala d’Or. You will have to jump in a taxi or take the popular tourist train for the 5 minute journey. Separating these resorts is the marina. Cala Egos has two small beaches to choose from. These offer parasol and other typical beach rentals.
It’s well worth checking out the natural pool (picture above) during your stay. There are several bars and restaurants here but much of the nightlife tends to happen in Cala d’Or itself.
Cala Ferrera is the most northern of the 3 districts with plenty of natural beauty on offer. This is particularly true if you stay at the Cala Ferrera hotel that overlooks the beach and the cove below.
Like Cala Egos, this area is small with only a few local bars and restaurants in the immediate vicinity. A 10 minute journey south will take you to the main village where most of the action is taking place.
