Once the capital of Islamic Spain, Córdoba lies inland on the banks of the Guadalquivir River. The city is home to the second largest old town in Europe which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located close to the river banks is the city’s most visited landmark, the stunning Mezquita dating from 784 AD.
Córdoba Mezquita (Mosque)
This is the Great Mosque of Córdoba, one of the world’s most admired Islamic buildings. Radiating out from the mosque are the narrow lanes of the Muslim and Jewish quarters. Below the Mezquita visitors can enjoy the cool breeze blowing along the riverside bars and restaurants. Heading north away from the river there are a number of monuments, churches and plazas. Centred around Plaza de las Tendillas, Córdoba shows a more modern aspect with trendy shops and boutiques and vibrant bars, cafes and restaurants.
Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos (Roman Bridge)
Throughout Córdoba, welcoming shade can be found in the city’s beautiful parks and gardens. Just a short stroll along the riverbank from the impressive Roman Bridge is the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos. Here visitors can explore the Moorish palace and take a wander through the pretty gardens. A bit further along there are two attractions for the young ones to enjoy.
Ciudad de los Niños
Ciudad de los Niños is a children’s park and adventure playground. This offers water games, water wheels, swings, mini golf and a flying fox ride. There are shady areas to enjoy a picnic and the park is located next to the botanical gardens and municipal zoo.
The zoo is great value for money at less than 5€ and is kept clean and tidy. It is not very big so can be explored in an hour or two. Unusual for a family attraction, the zoo has no food or drink facilities. Therefore take along a picnic to enjoy in the children’s park beforehand.
